Raising Readers: Pressure-free ways to help your child fall in love with books!

Reading for pleasure is the number one indicator of future success for children! 🎉

Hello, brilliant parents and carers! How do I know you’re brilliant already when we’ve only just met? Because you’re here!

You’re determined to help your child discover a lifelong love of reading that will not only bring them joy and fun (because reading should be fun!), but it’ll also bring them a whole heap of amazing and surprising benefits. Here are just some of them:

🐺 increased empathy

🐺 better general knowledge

🐺 better performance in exams

🐺 improved mental health

🐺 more confidence

🐺 stronger spelling and vocabulary

and loads more I’ll tell you about in the webinar!

That’s all brilliant, of course. But you’ve already tried everything, right? You’ve explained to your child why reading is important. You’ve given them books to try. You’ve rewarded them, bribed them, lectured them. But they still just don’t want to read.

I mean, why pick up a book when there’s a perfectly good Playstation right there? Why read a chapter of a story that probably won’t be very good anyway, when they could be scrolling YouTube? They KNOW that’s going to be fun!

And it’s the wanting that really matters. Children will read books at school, and they’ll probably have to read out loud to you at home. But it’s reading for pleasure that really brings the most benefits.

So how do you unlock that love of books in your child without pressuring them and turning them off reading altogether?

In this jam-packed webinar class, I’ll give you all my secrets for encouraging children to read for fun.

And when I say ‘all’ I really mean it.

This webinar was supposed to be 30 minutes long but accidentally grew into three hours because I couldn’t stop talking and giving you tips!🤭

Don’t worry: it’s broken down into 25 short videos with transcripts and resource lists.

Got questions? Email me or say hello through my online chat bubble below!

There is lots of information in here, and even some stats (sorry). But there are also loads of fun ideas, clever resources, colourful slides and three different pairs of earrings to keep things fresh. Watch the whole webinar at once (I talk A LOT, I’m sorry) or go through the 25 videos one by one in your own time.

Watch a 5-minute sneak preview!

Here’s a snippet from the introduction to the course to help you decide if this course feels right for you.

Who’s teaching this thing, anyway?

Hi, I’m Siobhán O’Brien Holmes and I’m a children’s book editor, working with authors of middle grade and young adult novels 🌈

I have a Master’s in Children’s Literature and one in Novel Writing, so I really do eat, sleep and breathe children’s books!

Maybe more importantly, I’m a parent, and I’ve tried everything to help my son actually choose to read books instead of playing on his Nintendo Switch.

I also volunteer at a school library and my local children’s library, so I have hands-on experience of helping children find books to read (and listening to them complaining about having to read books in the first place).

I’m putting everything I’ve learned as a parent, an editor, a school librarian and a bookworm into this webinar so you don’t have to do go through quite as much trial and error as I have.
